Grass, brush fire breaks out in Bowie County

BOWIE CO., TX (KSLA) -

Firefighters in Pleasant Grove, Texas, just outside Texarkana, battled a large grass and brush fire Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out on property off Gin Road.  "When we got here it was still burning pretty good.  And between us and everybody on scene, we we're able to get it knocked down pretty quick and under control," said Josh Kurtz, chief for the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department.

Bowie County Commissioner Tom Whitten was driving by when he spotted the smoke.  He stopped to help.  "The wind changed on us and uh, just went from bad to worse," Whitten said.

Fire investigators say the fire may have been started by a cigarette but the investigation is not over.  "Not sure exactly where it started.  It's still under investigation on that," Kurtz said.

Kurtz added, "Looks like we burnt about a couple of acres and saved a few structures on the back side from getting burnt."

This was one of several grass and brush fires that were reported Sunday in Bowie County.
