Freedom Fighters: Floyd Barthel

Floyd Barthel was one of General Patton's combat engineers, given the task of building a pontoon bridge across an Austrian river, so his forces could get to the Battle of the Bulge.

Only three of the eleven engineers in Barthel's group survived.  Barthel was wounded by a shell blast and was told he would lose his eyesight.

In time, when Barthel recovered most of his sight, he was sent to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan, prevented by the dropping of the atomic bomb. Ay the age of 93, Floyd Barthel insists he was only :one of many" to fight in World War Two to fight for our country.
