TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Everyone who was asked to evacuate a building on the UT Health Northeast campus in Tyler Friday after a gas leak has now been allowed to return.

According to UT Health Northeast Police Chief Robert Cromley, a gas leak occurred in a parking lot near a research support building. The leak began when workers accidentally damaged a natural gas line Friday morning.

The gas has been turned off and the line is being repaired. The leak prompted the evacuation of the support building and another building nearby.

UT Health Northeast President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun stressed that the leak was far from the main hospital and clinic buildings.

“No patient care or hospital areas were evacuated, and we are open and providing patient care as usual,” Dr. Calhoun said.

Traffic near the UT Health Northeast was diverted while emergency crews worked to stop the leak.
