SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A man who recently moved to Shreveport from Arlington, TX is behind bars, accused of scamming several local banks to support his gambling habit.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff's office says 46-year-old John Darrien Hays moved to the area just six months ago. In that time, investigators say he used counterfeit checks and stolen or fake social security numbers to open accounts at eight local banks and credit unions, and then withdrew the cash.

Investigators say he also negotiated forged checks to withdraw money. In all, about $30,000 was taken.

Hays was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center on eight counts of bank fraud, four counts of forgery, and two counts of identity theft following an investigation by Caddo sheriff's detectives.

Bond on those charges have been set at a total of $85,737.50, but Hays remains held without bond on a state probation violation charge.
