Grace senior Kade Clayton wasn't sure how Friday night would go. Battling a stomach virus much of the week, the Cougars biggest offensive weapon felt lousy.
"I was actually worried," said Clayton. "But I said my prayers and God got me through it."
After San Augustine built an early 14 to 0 lead, the Cougars jumped on Clayton's back. He quickly turned things around with an 80 yard touchdown run.
"After that run I felt like I was dead," said Clayton.
The senior was very much alive. Clayton finished the night with 279 yards and three touchdowns in a 46 to 33 come from behind win.
"I know he got tired but he'd been sick that week," said Grace quarterback Chandler Nutt. "We knew he had to step up and he knew he had to also. He stepped up, even when he was tired kept working hard."
After posting more than 1,500 yards as a junior, Clayton already has offers from SMU, Texas State and Old Dominion. Perhaps he can attract even more attention if he runs sick.
"I don't think I would like to do that," said Clayton with a laugh.
He would like to keep winning and scoring touchdowns.
