PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A motorcycle crash in Prairieville, La. has claimed the life of a St. Amant woman around noon of Sunday, September 1.

According to TFC Jared L. Sandifer of the Louisiana State Police, investigations revealed that Loretta A. Ward, 63, was killed after riding a 2008 Harley Davidson  southbound on US 61 when the motorcycle struck a vehicle.

The driver of a 2008 Nissan Maxima, Walker resident Stephanie Ledoux, 36, was stopped at a red light at the intersection of LA 73 and US 61. Police report that once the traffic light turned green, Ledoux began traveling eastbound through the intersection to make a left turn and head northbound on US 61. However, for unknown reasons, Ward continued to travel through the intersection and struck the Nissan on its left side.

State Police say that Ward was wearing a safety helmet, but still suffered fatal injuries from the crash. Ledoux was wearing a seatbelt and suffered moderate injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police do not suspect impairment on either driver.

Sandifer released this statement about motorcycle safety:

"Troopers urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices such as being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
