HOMER, LA (KSLA) -

The Town of Homer, Louisiana is mourning the loss of a local 16 year-old student after he suddenly died Thursday afternoon.

Ge'kobe Hunter was playing a pick-up game of basketball, Thursday afternoon, when he suddenly collapsed on the court. Hunter was rushed to Homer Hospital where he was tragically pronounced dead shortly after arrival. After speaking with Homer's Mayor, Alecia Smith, and Gekobe's family, it's quite clear that Gekobe Hunter made a huge impact on the community. "Ge'kobe is the life within our family, within the town, within the school. He was very lovable." Said Ge'kobe's Aunt, Kennetha Randel.

It shows that many people cared for Ge'kobe. Once the news got out, the community quickly responded with an outpouring of thoughts and prayers for the family.Ge'kobe's Uncle Michael Randel remembers, "Seeing all of the kids come to the hospital out of concern and support spoke volumes to me and to those who witnessed it, how important and what type of influence Ge'kobe had on this community as well as on his friends at the school."

Even Mayor Smith recently worked with Ge'kobe in a school supply drive through his leadership role in the Future Business Leaders of America Organization."He volunteered his time to help bag the supplies, separate the supplies, and welcome the children in and he was here early to make sure everything was ok." Said Mayor Smith.

Mayor Smith extends her thoughts and prayers to Ge'kobe's family, "When you wake up and send your kid to school, it never crosses your mind that they won't come back. I may be the Mayor of Homer but Ge'kobe Hunter is 'Mr. Homer.'"

For now, there are still more questions than answers as the family awaits the results of an autopsy but say that they will remain strong through their faith and through the outpouring of love and support from the community.
