BENTON, LA (KSLA) -

Officials from the town of Benton say they are raising their water and sewage rates.

Benton Mayor Wayne Cathcart says it's just something that had to happen. "No one, especially a mayor or a town council, wants to raise rates on their citizens, but it it's simply math. We're charged with the responsibility to maintain the system," says Cathcart.

Here is a look at the rates that are set to increase:

  • Water: $6.98/1,000 gallons
  • Sewer: $2.50/1,000 gallons
  • Solid Waste: $17/month

Cathcart says the increases started on August 26th.
