NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Haven man is recovering after he accidentally shot himself Saturday.

Police said they were called to Yale-New Haven Hospital around 8 p.m. Saturday after getting word of a gunshot victim at the facility.

Police said they spoke to James Pace Sr., 82, and he told them the incident occurred at his home.

He said he had been having a problem with a large raccoon that, for days, had been scratching at his back door. So to take care of the problem he armed himself with a .22 rifle and waited for it to show itself.

While he was waiting, he said he sneezed and fell out of his chair, and that's when he realized he shot himself in the shin.

He told his son what happened and he brought him to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting is under investigation.
