2-A-Days Previews: Evangel Christian Academy

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

It was business as usual inside the Evangel Eagles football stadium, even though the team will begin the season with a new head coach. Byron DAwson took over the program last Spring.

"I'm just excited about having the opportunity to lead this school. This is a program that has done so much for my life," said Dawson, who played for Evangel in high school before becoming a four year player at LSU.

Dawson spent several years on the coaching staff at Evangel before stepping into this new role. In his first season the team will make history when freshman quarterback Connor Curry gets his first start.

"It's been 1991 since we had a freshman starting quarterback at Evangel so this is kind of some uncharted waters. Connor is a kid that is very coachable. He listens. He has a calmness about him."

Offensive lineman Justin Armstead will anchor a line that will do its best to protect the young quarterback.

"Last year I played right tackle and we had one of the best offensive lines in the region so we're just trying to be better or as great as they were last year," said Armstead.

Curry will have help from his defense which boasts two D-I commits.

"Chris Bradley just committed to Arkansas Razorback. Jerry Tillery he's committed to Notre Dame. Jarome Anderson another great senior," said Dawson. "They really want to carry our team this year."
