Salemtown neighbors on edge after rash of car break-ins

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

One Nashville neighborhood is on edge as thieves have been on a spree. Salemtown, an old neighborhood that's become new and popular again, seems to have also caught the attention of crooks.

As crime continues a downward trend in Nashville, neighbors in Salemtown are adamant to stop the break-ins along Fifth and Sixth avenues North.

"My roommate and I's cars were both hit at the same time," said resident Robbie Guerre. "Unfortunately, they just broke in just to rummage around and see if there was a chance something was available."

The thief got away with Guerre's sunglasses, which may not seem so serious, but it's just part of a disturbing rash of crime in recent weeks.

Police confirmed a set of eight car break-ins over the past weekend alone.

Neighbors, however, said the total they calculated was at least a dozen and just the latest in a rough summer.

"For us, it appears to be some kind of vandalism more than a theft issue," said Metro police Sgt. Tony Blackburn. "Now, we have had some problems up there with gang activity lately. However, this - to me - does not appear to be gang-related, simply because that's not usually their style."

Still, police boosted patrols in the area, and neighbors pledge to stay on watch and stay connected for the sake of the part of town they love.

"We know how frustrating it must be for our neighbors. Because all of a sudden, it's like, 'Well, we've made a few key arrests and yet some of this stuff continues to happen,'" said Neighborhood Association President Freddie O'Connell. "We're not just going to lay down and let it happen. This is our neighborhood and we're going to do whatever we can to make sure this stops."

Police added they will also use some covert ways to patrol the area undetected and said this serves as a good reminder for all of us to "park smart" by keeping your doors locked and all valuables hidden.
