A Fairpark Indians team that went undefeated during pool play at this summer's 7 on 7 tournament, is using a great off-season as a burst into the regular season.

Over the past three years, Fairpark has had its shares of struggles but sometimes you have to struggle before you can succeed.  Last year's one win season was with a young team.

Head coach Mike Greene says "Really the record wasn't indicative of the season. We were in every game even these guys as freshmen and sophomores did a heck of a job. We've got 9 starters coming back on defense, 7 on offense and I'm excited about it."

Greene is excited like every team is this time of year after the blood sweat and tears of the summer.

"This off season here we've been going harder and harder everyday so we can come out on top. Last year we were 1-9 and that wasn't really what we wanted," says senior lineman Laddarius Woodards.

Greene adds "We took some lumps last year to get these guys ready so we're hoping it pays off this year."

Back under center at quarterback, is a very young but now experienced sophomore Se Derrick Smith who started all 10 games as a freshman last season.

"He's had a great off season. He's throwing well. He did well on 7 on 7 so even though he's just going to be a sophomore. It's like a junior or senior as far as playing time," says Greene.

On defense coach Greene is hoping the crew will not only get to football in a hurry but not be happy when they get there, "So far in the spring in the spring and up until now they've done a good job of being physical and getting after it."

As for expectations, they are lofty to say the least. "We're hoping to hit 10 and 0. We got to go as hard as we can to get what we want," says Woodards.

The Indians open the season at Booker T. Washington on September 6th.
