BIENVILLE PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Firefighters are back out at the scene of a fire at a gas storage facility in Bienville Parish, where lightning set a battery of tanks ablaze Tuesday afternoon.

It all started at the Bear Creek Storage Company on Highway 9 south of Arcadia sometime before 4 p.m.

North Bienville Fire Chief Gary Hathorn says 8 tanks were set on fire by the lightning strike, and that there have been several explosions. The fire grew so large, Hathorn they had to step back and allow them to burn.

Mutual aid was called in to help.

The fire appeared to be under control as of late Tuesday afternoon, but by 8 p.m. Hathorn was headed back out to the scene, responding to a flare-up.  "We had a pretty catastrophic secondary explosion down here, and probably had flames shooting 300 feet in the air," Hathorn says.

About a dozen tanks in all went up in flames. Another battery of tanks about 100 feet away were spared. Firefighters will remain stationed at the site overnight to keep an eye on things.

Highway 9 had been shut down at the height of the blaze, but has since reopened. Hathorn says there was never any risk to the public, and no need for evacuation.

Bear Creek Storage Co. provides natural gas or sells petroleum gasoline for residential and commercial customers.

There were no reports of any injuries.
