Semi hits van parked on I-20, killing father and young son


Louisiana State Police have identified the father and son killed early Monday morning when they an 18-wheeler plowed into their van as it sat on the shoulder of Interstate 20 in Bienville Parish.

Troopers say it crash happened sometime between midnight at 3:00 a.m. on the eastbound lane of I-20 just east of Gibsland, LA.

48-year-old Miguel Salas and his 10-year-old son Miguel Moreno were standing outside the Dodge Caravan because young Miguel was sick when trooper say they were struck by a 2012 Freightliner 18-wheeler headed east on I-20 before continuing off the side of the interstate and hitting a tree. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Three others in the van were taken to a hospital in Ruston with minor injuries. They are identified as 73-year-old Ma'Angel Amaya of Col. Abiacion, Mexico, 45-year-old Juana Salas and 13-year-old Luis Salas both of Lillington, North Carolina. The family was believed to be headed to North Carolina.

State Police say alchol use is not suspected. Toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Just two days ago, an accident with similar circumstances happened in Texarkana, AR along I-30. One of the three victims in that crash was a 7-year-old boy.
