Back to school giveaways and events in Shreveport-Bossier this weekend

Here is a list of back-to-school giveaways and events set for this weekend in the Shreveport-Bossier area:

Shreveport

Backpack giveaway: Evergreen Baptist Church on Allen Avenue, Shreveport is holding its 12th annual back to school giveaway from 10 a.m. to Noon in the church parking lot. This event is open to everyone, first come, first serve.

Body by "O" backpack giveaway: Local fitness expert "O" is making sure children will be ready for school by giving away more than 250 loaded backpacks on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 4711 Greenwood Road. This event is open to everyone, first come, first serve. There will also be free food for the first 100 kids. Shreveport Fire and Police Department will also be on hand taking applications from any parents who may be job hunting.

Back to school shoe giveaway: The African American Committee will be giving out shoes to children Pre-K through 12 who have registered in advance. Pickup will take place on Saturday, August 10 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Walmart near Pines Road at 6235 West Port Avenue. 

Backpack and school supply giveaway: Heavenly Glow Salon and Boutique, 4123 Greenwood Rd. Sat August 10 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. First come, first serve. Owner Brenda Robinson says she bought the school supplies and backpacks to give back the community.

Free haircuts/styles: On Sunday, free haircuts for boys and free hair styles for girls will be offered at Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, 2812 Greenwood Rd next to the Louisiana Fairgrounds, starting at 3 p.m.

Bossier

Back to School Bash for Bossier students: Bossier Parish School Board District 10 Representative Samm Darby is hosting a back to school bash from 10 a.m. to Noon Saturday, August 10, in the activity building at Hooter Neighborhood Community Park. All students and parents are invited to attend. Hooter Park is located at 100 Hooter Drive in Bossier City.
Bossier Schools Superintendent D.C. Machen will give an overview and answer questions about the 2013-14 school year. There will also be representatives from the Child Nutrition Department on hand to disseminate information about the district's meal program and from the Transportation Department to discuss bus rules and safety. Faculty and staff from Bossier High School, Kerr Elementary, T.O. Rusheon Middle School and Waller Elementary will be there, too, to meet and greet students and their parents.
Swag Nation will be at the event as well to talk about appropriate school attire and backpacks and school supplies will be given out to those that attend.

Back to School Style Search: On Sunday, Teen Vogue hosts "Back-to-School Saturday" at Louisiana Boardwalk with style search competition at Noon. Ten finalists chosen through the Teen Vogue Facebook page will compete for chance to win trip for two to NYC and a tour of Teen Vogue offices. "Best Dressed" winner chosen by audience applause.
