Police target lawn care equipment thieves

Whether it's a lawn care company or a private owner, some pay several thousand dollars for weed-eaters and lawnmowers. And police say those kinds of tools have recently become a pretty tempting target for thieves.

The Shreveport Police Department responded by loading up a trailer full of equipment and parking it in one of the hot spots.

On Monday, a sting was carried out on 75th Street. When someone reportedly took the bait and ran, the chase, which included two Police K-9's, was on.

"That young man was accused of stealing lawn equipment from a trailer that was parked in that area," said Cpl. Marcus Hines with the Shreveport Police Department.

Police say the thefts have been occurring at homes and businesses, and some lawn care trailers.

"It's part of their livelihood when you talk about someone who may steal a weed-eater or a lawn mower that may cast several hundred dollars and they may sell it on the street for 10 or 15 dollars," said Hines.
Only one arrest has been made so far, and it was a juvenile. But police say they won't stop carrying out the operation anytime soon and he warns thieves, the next trailer they try to steal from could belong to the police department.
