CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
It was a beautiful sight, Gina DeJesus soaking up the sun and waving to the crowds at a Puerto Rican parade over the weekend.

But she did it wearing a campaign t-shirt, riding in a campaign car and that had some crying foul.

19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek sat down with Gina and her parents and council candidate Janet Garcia. They explained how this had nothing to do with politics.

"People need to stop saying these negative things. It's not hurting my family, it's hurting my daughter, Gina," said Felix DeJesus, Gina's father. "I thought it would be a good way for me and Janet for the Puerto Ricans, my heritage, to see Gina starting to heal. I didn't mean to hurt nobody out of this, I wanted them to see Gina."

"The only thing I could think of is seeing my daughter smiling enjoying herself for the first time in nine years on top of that car," said Nancy Ruiz, Gina's mother.

Gina tells Reporter Ed Gallek she was stunned by the crowds.

"Gina's OK'd it. It was her decision not just Felix and mine," says Nancy Ruiz. "She was ready for it. It was her way of saying thank you to the community."

Gina, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight were rescued from Ariel Castro's Seymour Avenue home in Cleveland this past May, after spending more than a decade in captivity.

Last Friday, Castro was sentenced to life in prison, without parole.

The Seymour Avenue home is scheduled to be torn down Wednesday, August 7.
