SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Fair Grounds Field continues to face challenges. But some feel a grassroots approach might help solve them.

The iconic baseball park in Shreveport used to play host to affiliate baseball, but those days are long gone and the field's deteriorating condition has become a complex problem for city leaders. It's a problem that show no signs of being solved any time soon.

So Sam Stroope created a Facebook page called Rescue Fairgrounds Field.

Stroope took pictures of what he calls overgrown weeds and grass and posted them on his page, hoping it will spark change.

"That's a great facility, and even if it's used for tournaments, softball tournaments, the city could work to get those and there are people in town who would work with them if they would reach out," said Stroope.

But Shreveport Parks and Rec managers say operating at that level would result in more money being spent than brought in as revenue.

And what's more: The facility has been home to bats, which is about a $600,000 problem.

It costs the city about $700 a month just to clean up their mess.

So until someone comes up with a solution, the wholesome ballpark that Stroope describes on the Facebook page as a tax investment that the city is not maintaining will continue to decline, and cost money to simply exist.
