LSU saw its number of qualifiers for the 113th United States Amateur Championship rise to four on Monday afternoon as junior Stewart Jolly and senior Landon Lyons claimed the top two spots after two rounds of the U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier held at Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison, Miss.
Jolly and Lyons join a pair of fellow Tigers already in the field for the U.S. Amateur Championship as rising juniors Myles Lewis and Ben Taylor each won their sectional qualifiers two weeks ago.
Like Lewis and Taylor, both Jolly and Lyons will also make their debut at the U.S. Amateur Championship later this summer as the 113th edition of the most prestigious amateur tournament hosted by the United States Golf Association will be held from Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Jolly fired rounds of 2-under 70 and 5-under 67 for a 36-hole score of 7-under par 137 to claim a two-shot victory over Lyons and fellow LSU teammate and rising senior Smylie Kaufman to earn his spot in the field.
Lyons, who posted rounds of 4-under 68 and 1-under 71, matched Kaufman's effort with a score of 5-under par 139 in two rounds of stroke play as they then squared off in a sudden-death playoff for the second place in the U.S. Amateur field from the sectional qualifier at Reunion Golf & Country Club. Lyons made birdie on the second playoff hole to earn his spot in the field, while Kaufman finished as the first alternate.
