CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Students at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College have a new tool at their disposal - a desktop 3D printer.

Officials say the machine is much less expensive to operate and maintain than earlier generation 3D printers and represents a technology that is rapidly moving into the workplace and could soon be in the home.

It will be used in the Industrial Design program. Designs are created using a special software and the printer makes the object using a plastic thread.

School officials say if you can design it, the machine can print it.

"Cincinnati State is a place where we train people for the workforce. Community colleges are very open, but what we do mainly is to put people to work," said Cincinnati State President O'dell M. Owens.

A special demonstration was held Tuesday at Cincinnati State to recognize Advertiser Printers, the donor of the new 3D printer.
