KSLA News 12 Editorial: July 29th-Mental Health

Posted: Updated:

Over the past few years, we have all been shocked by mass killings involving young people.

Columbine High School---13 killed, 12 killed at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado and 27 dead at Sandy Hook Elementary. All examples of young people accused of these horrendous crimes. It all raises into question the problem of mental illness in this country and what can be done to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Because of this, the National Association of Broadcasters and KSLA News 12 are presenting a series of public service messages designed to let people know it's okay to talk about mental health.

Less than 20% of young people get the help they need for mental health conditions. One third of all mental health issues begin before the age of 24.

It's time to talk about mental health and its effect on our youth.

I'm James Smith.
