Broken water line forces closure of Hwy. 531 in Heflin

HEFLIN, LA (KSLA) -

State transportation officials say that a broken water line is to blame for the temporary closure of a segment of LA 531 in Heflin.

The state shut down the highway at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, saying that the broken water line had undermined the roadway. Officials anticipate an opening date no later than Saturday.

The highway closure begins at the LA 792 intersection in Heflin and ends at Mims Grocery Road, which is about 2.4 miles east.

Because the actual road damage to LA 531 is located about three-quarters of a mile east of LA 792, residents there can reach their homes from the west or east side of the damaged highway.

Motorists are advised to detour via LA 531 to I-20 to U.S. 371. The road will be open to local traffic and residents only.
