TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

A new group, called The American Rifle and Pistol Association, is hoping to become the go-to social media site for gun owners.

The American Rifle and Pistol Association's stated goal is to provide a non-partisan, digital place for gun owners to interact.

"We literally want this to be the go-to place for anything and everything about firearms," says the group's founder, Bob Gelinas.

Gelinas says the American Rifle and Pistol Association is a media platform where members have a main belief: protecting the second amendment.

"We also believe in John Lott's premise that more guns equals less crime... that trying to get guns out of more law abiding people's hands has been a proven disaster," says Gelinas.

The group's Facebook presence is growing, but some citizens are skeptical. On their Facebook page, some people posted comments calling the group, "pretty slick," then accusing them of trying to strip citizens of their rights to own weapons.

"We're definitely a pro-gun organization. We're all fellow gun owners. I mean, I myself am a concealed handgun carrier here in the state of Texas. We absolutely want our gun rights protected. We are not a pro-gun control organization," Gelinas says.

As pro-gun as they might be, the American Rifle and Pistol Association is in no way affiliated with the National Rifle Association. Both the NRA and Rifle and Pistol Association educate, train and offer membership. However, the Rifle and Pistol group says they don't have a political agenda. They say they're a social media and networking group.

"We're developing an iPhone and an Android app that you'll be able to download as a member. That'll let you do everything from not only be able to participate in the communication and activities of the group, but you'll have services that we offer... like how to find the nearest gun shop or gun range or places to go hunting. You'll be able to connect with other members to maybe find a hunting buddy or a range partner," says Gelinas.

The group is still very new, but eventually their success and longevity will be determined by participation from their members.

The men who founded the American Rifle and Pistol Association are from the business, tech and manufacturing industries. None of them work for the firearms manufacturing industry, nor are they law enforcement officers or politicians.
