PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police officer fired shots at a vehicle trying to run him down in an apparent drug deal Thursday afternoon, police said.

Officers said they saw a suspected drug deal going down near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, said Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Officers followed the two vehicles into a cul-de-sac near 47th Avenue and Sweetwater.

One of the vehicles drove toward the uniformed officer trying to approach.

"Fearing for his life, he fired and discharged his weapon at this vehicle as it drove past him," Martos said.

The officer opened fire but the driver swerved into someone's yard to get away. The other vehicle carrying a man and woman stayed at the scene.

Police were able to identify the fleeing driver, who had a female passenger with him.

Officers found the vehicle at a McDonalds restaurant near 67th Avenue and Peoria, close to where the suspect lives.

After watching his home, police detained the man leaving the home with a woman in her pickup truck.

No one was hurt.

The incident remains under investigation.
