Of the 32 rifles stolen from the Maud residence, 13 have since been recovered by Bowie County Sheriff's investigators.
BOWIE CO., TX (KSLA) -
A man wanted in connection with the theft of thousands of dollars worth of weapons and ammunition from an East Texas home is now in police custody.
24-year-old Douglas Kyle Burnett was wanted for burglary of a habitation. Police identified him as one of several people believed to have been involved in two separate burglaries of Dr. Khalid Malick's Maud home at the end of June. More than 30 firearms, along with ammunition and other items, were taken.
Acting on tips from the community, authorities managed to track down and recover 13 of the stolen weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammo from a storage shed and camper in Simms, Texas. That information also led authorities to issue an arrest warrant for Burnett on Wednesday.
Chief Deputy Jeffrey Neal says Douglas says he turned himself at the Bi-State Justice Building Thursday afternoon, with his attorney at his side.
He was arrested around 2 p.m. and Judge Nancy Talley set his bond at $75,000.00.
The search for other suspects continues, as investigators believe Burnett had help. "What we are being told is that the actors involved have an addiction to methamphetamine and are selling these guns to get money to buy dope or trading these guns for dope," according to Bowie County Sheriff's Investigator David Biggar.
