E. Texas man finishes a close second in ETX "Best Dad on Wheels" competition

The votes are in and an East Texas man has come in an extremely close second in a national contest called 'Best Dad on Wheels.'

"I didn't realize the impact of me just living my life going forward had on others," says Jason Hammonds from Pittsburg.

For weeks, votes had been cast in the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation 'Best Dad on Wheels 'competition, and Hammonds was neck and neck in the final day's voting.

"My three kids and my fiancee told me that I was nominated, that was the greatest day right there - just the fact that they felt enough to nominated me meant the world to me," Jason says.

Jason was paralyzed from the chest down in a motorcycle accident 5 years ago, but he never let that stop him from being a good father.

"You're not doing it for any kind of prize or pay , you're doing it for the satisfaction of your children," he says.

He was flooded with e-mails and phone calls supporting him,  but came up just percentage points short.

His fiancee and children nominated him for the award, and though disappointed, still think Jason is the winner.

"Well we were kind of disappointed because we had worked so hard to get votes for him because we truly thought that he was the best dad on wheels. But its all good because he is the best dad on wheels," says fiancee Jennifer Massey.

"Its a win-win situation because the whole goal was to get exposure for the reeve foundation and what they do,"  Hammonds says.

For Jason, winning doesn't matter.

"Just the fact that my kids, my family, finding out the way my friends feel the way they do , it means more to me than any prize i could win. I felt like a winner the day i was nominated," says Jason.
