SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The 3-year-old girl whose body was found in her mother's car Friday afternoon died of a heat stroke, according to the Caddo Parish Coroner, Dr. Todd Thoma.

Police were called to the mother's house in the 3000 block of Desoto Street in Shreveport's Ingleside neighborhood just after 4:30 p.m., where the car was parked in the driveway.

Investigators say the girl may have been in the car for as many as 19 hours before her mother came out as she was heading to work and discovered the child in the back seat.

The mother, who has two other children, has been questioned by police as the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the 3-year-old's death.

"That's unclear at this moment, how, what took place that led up to the child not being accounted for such a long period of time," SPD Cpl. Marcus Hines said Friday. "That's a question that we're all trying to determine right now."

Temperatures reached a high of 93 in Shreveport on Friday, and temperatures inside a vehicle can be more than 50 degrees higher when the windows are rolled up. KSLA News 12 Chief Meteorologist Stephen Parr says temperatures inside a vehicle under Friday's conditions could have risen to 120 degrees or more.
