CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Caddo Commissioners approved on Friday a measure that asks parish voters to decide this fall whether commissioners can stay in office longer.

Commissioners voted 9-3 to approve the ballot measure, which would extend commissioner term limits to 5 consecutive terms, up from 3 consecutive terms.

The current three-term limit means that commissioners can serve up to 12 years in office.

But, rather than eliminate term limits altogether, the measure leaves it up to the voters to decide whether to allow commissioners to serve 20 years straight or 5 four-year terms.

The issue has been added to other measure already on the ballot for the special election on October 19.
