An afternoon fire destroyed an East Texas family's home on Friday.
The fire started around 12:30 p.m. off of County Road 288.
No one was home when the fire started. The homeowners said they had just sat down for lunch at a restaurant when they received a phone call that smoke was coming from their house.
A neighbor called 911 and Chapel Hill, Arp and Whitehouse Fire Departments responded.
It took almost an hour to get the fire under control.
"Upon our arrival, we had heavy smoke showing. We did try to make an offensive attack. We had heavy fire conditions inside the residence. Due to the heavy fire and smoke, we were forced out to a defensive position and to try to extinguish the fire from there," said Lieutenant Daniel Prather with the Chapel Hill Fire Department.
The homeowners said they do have insurance and are thankful no one was injured. The Smith County Fire Marshal is investigation what started the fire.
