NEW BOSTON, TX (KSLA/AP) - The home at the center of the federal investigation into ricin-laced letters sent to the president and other public officials has been cleared and turned back over to Nathan Richardson.
Federal agents raided the home in the New Boston subdivision of Twin Oaks on May 30, after Shannon Richardson told authorities that she suspected her husband had something to do with the threatening letters sent to President Obama, New York City Michael Bloomberg and this gun control lobbying organization.
For the next few days, investigators in hazmat suits could be seen going in and out of the home. Even after the federal agents were gone, the home remained off-limits, guarded by local law enforcement until it could be cleared. A notice posted on the front door declared the home was under quarantine.
Sources tell KSLA News 12 that quarantine was lifted on Friday, and Nathan Richardon's attorney John Delk confirms that the home has been turned back over to his client. There is no word on whether Nathan Richardson has returned to the home.
His estranged wife, Shannon Richardson, remains in federal custody at the Titus County Jail without bond since her arrest June 7 on a charge of sending a threatening communication to the president.
A federal judge Thursday ordered a psychological exam for the 35-year-old mother of five, after her court-appointed attorney requested the exam. Based on a series of conversations with her client, Curry expressed concern that Richardson had displayed "a pattern of behavior" that raised the question about whether she could assist in her defense.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Caroline Craven's ruling means Richardson, who is six months pregnant, will be evaluated at a medical facility within the federal Bureau of Prisons, possibly within the next 30 days, to determine whether she can assist in her defense.
Curry filed the motion requesting the exam Thursday morning, just hours before a scheduled detention hearing. The detention issue was postponed until after Richardson's mental competency is determined.
