The TISD school board appointed Dr. Kenneth Gay as JohnTyler High School's new principal during their board meeting Thursday night.
Dr. Gay most recently worked as assistant principal of aHouston high school in the Aldine Independent School District.
He says the community should be proud because getting thejob wasn't easy, "Parents,students, as well as community and business leaders, and stake holders in theTyler community should be very happy. The process was very rigorous."
Doctor Gay says the school district and community members asked him some toughquestions about how he plans to move John Tyler forward.
"I'mjust ready to get involved and bring a whole lot of pride back to John TylerHigh School."
Hewants the school to work on teacher-student and teacher-parent relationships tomake sure everyone is working together to make the school better.
"We'regoing to have high expectations on our campus and also have accountabilitymeasures to make sure we're meeting those high expectations."
Theschool board says they are going to help facilitate improvements in thedistrict by creating committees to focus on problem areas.
"You'llhave a committee that's focused on discipline, you'll have a committee that'sfocused on academics, and you'll have a committee focusing on what I callculture of the school district," says Tyler ISD School Board PresidentOrenthia Mason.
"Thenew legacy begins now. We'll write our own chapter, we'll move forward, butit's going to take a collaborative effort of everyone to make a difference,"Dr. Gay says.
Dr.Gay's motto for the new school year is "Success and nothing less," something hewill expect from every one of his high school students.
TISDalso appointed new principals to three of the district's elementary schoolsduring Thursday night's meeting.
AlajandraLara is the new Orr Elementary School principal.
MichelleJarnagin is the new Ramey Elementary School principal
LaurieGreathouse is the new Owens Elementary School Principal.
