SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

What began on Friday as a response by Shreveport Police to a traffic accident turned into an investigation of shots fired and the arrest of one of the drivers in the accident.

Police were called just before 1:30 p.m. to the Line Avenue and Turner Lane intersection to investigate a major accident in which three people were injured.

The collision happened, police say, as a driver tried to turn left onto Turner Lane from the 7500 block of Line Avenue but crashed with a car that was heading north on Line Avenue. Three people from the opposing vehicle were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were considered non life-threatening.

But police called in Shreveport Police Violent Crimes detectives after more questioning of one of the drivers in the accident, Dederick Mackey. They say Mackey, 24, told them that he was trying to get away from a red, four-door vehicle (possibly a Jaguar) whose occupants had been firing shots at him when the collision occurred.

Detectives say they later discovered evidence suggesting that Mackey might have fired shots from his vehicle as well.

Mackey, who was not injured in the wreck, was detained at the scene and taken to police headquarters. After more questioning, police booked Mackey on charges of felon in possession of a firearm and illegal use of a weapon from a moving vehicle.
