SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport is home to many beautiful landmarks. Even the city's many graveyards are rich with history.

Now, plans are in the works to restore one of Shreveport's oldest cemeteries.

The plan calls for major improvements to Oakland Cemetery. It's the city's oldest burial ground and the final resting place of 16 of Shreveport's mayors.

From roads to fences, the cemetery needs some serious upgrades, city leaders say.

"The goal, which was to create a better experience here, a more accessible area, an area that we can come to and enjoy the history of our city," says Shreveport City Councilman Jeff Everson (Dist. B).

Work begins June 24 to clean, repair, and restore Oakland Cemetery. KSLA News 12 has learned that many other similar projects throughout the city will soon follow.
