SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

Demand for blood jumped after Thursday's chemical plant explosion in Baton Rouge, so the LifeShare Blood Centers in Shreveport is taking donations to help supplement the supply in South Louisiana.

The spike in demand came after 73 people were injured and 1 person was killed in the explosion in Geismar, Louisiana. LifeShare Blood Centers says it has provided all O-negative red blood cells and platelets available in the LifeShare Baton Rouge center.

Area hospitals have requested more blood, as treatment for these victims continues and the extent is still unknown.

LifeShare is currently sending blood components from Shreveport and Alexandria to support the medical needs, as a result of this explosion. Also, several other explosion patients are using large amounts of A positive plasma, and O negative and O positive red blood cells.

LifeShare Blood Centers is taking donations from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. today and Friday at its centers in Shreveport (8910 Linwood Ave.), Bossier City (1523 Doctors Dr.), and Texarkana (1321 College Dr.) centers.

Several mobile drives are being conducted, including Shreveport's Cuffs & Hoses blood drive from 8:30 p.m. until Midnight Friday at the Shreveport Police Dept., 1234 Texas Ave., and at various locations and hours through this Saturday.
