SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport's population, employment and median income grew between 2007 and 2011, according to a consumer finance web blog.

Nerdwallet.com ranked Shreveport No. 20 among 475 U.S. cities it analyzed to find cities that are growing in population, employment and income. The blog then ranked the cities according to growth rate in those categories.

Shreveport showed a 3.1 percent increase in population over 16 years of age, a 1.9 percent increase in employment, and a 7.8 percent rise in median income.

Mayor Cedric Glover welcomed the news, saying the news indicates a shift in population patterns.

"For the last several decades, anemic population growth has plagued not only Shreveport, but all of Louisiana,'' Glover says. "We have missed much of the population growth experienced by other states within the Sunbelt region. Since the 1980's, most of Louisiana's growth has been largely cannibalistic. Essentially we've shifted population back and forth across city and parish lines without any real net growth."

The other Louisiana city to make the top 20 was New Orleans, which ranked first. Others in the top 10 were Gainesville, FL, Fargo, ND, Fayetteville, NC, Odessa, TX, Mount Vernon, NY, Mountain View, CA, Highlands Ranch, CO, El Paso, TX, and Pasadena, CA.
