LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

School is not quite over for some students, as an East Texas university is holding summer camps that provide unique learning experiences that are not always found in traditional classrooms.

At LeTourneau University in Longview, kids from as far away as Frisco and Nacogdoches are attending summer camps for athletics and academic sciences.

"This week is summer camps at LeTourneau University. We have all ages here - we have from going into kindergarten to going into high school," says Marty Lane, LeTourneau University Director of Conference and Events.

They learn the rudimentary dynamics of flight.

"They can take a very complex thing such as flying an airplane, bring it down to a level off the students they're teaching and be able to share that with them so they get excited," Lane says.

"I like to get kids interested at elementary school age. Once they get turned on to science at that age when they get to middle school and high school , they're more likely to take science," says space camp instructor Lee Wilkinson.

Simple propulsion, designing their own rockets, and learning all that goes with it.

"We've been building stuff and we've been learning about types of rockets and what they do," says eight-year-old camper Joshua Howard.

"We did it last year and I really enjoyed the rocket launch," says campe Natalie Holder, nine.

"I've actually seen some campers who've gone through our camp who have later on come to LeTourneau University," Wilkinson says.

The camps will continue at LeTourneau University for the next 6 weeks. Each Friday the students will get to launch their own rocket design.
