Gallup: George W. Bush's approval rating reaches post-presidency high

(KLTV) -

The sentiment of the nation appears to be shifting, as Americans' views of former president George W. Bush have improved. 'Bush 43' now has more Americans viewing him favorably than unfavorably for the first time since 2005.

According to a Gallup Poll, 49% of American have a favorable opinion of the former president, while 46% still see him in a negative light. The Texas governor-turned president left office with 40% of the country viewing him favorably and 59% unfavorably in January 2009. That fell to 35% favorable and 63% unfavorable in March 2009, but Bush regained the mid-40% range by 2010.

Bush's lowest rating was 32% in April 2008, a time when the economy was in a recession and gas prices were headed towards record highs.

Gallup says the image recovery is not unexpected - Americans tend to look more favorably on former leaders. Bill Clinton's favorability rating dropped as low as 39% in the months after he left office, but rebounded to about 56% four years later.

Currently, 84% of Republicans, 46% of independents and 24% of Democrats have a favorable view of Bush. Each of these are up more than 10 points in the last four years.

Gallup first measured favorability ratings for presidents in its current format in 1992.
