SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A 26-year-old Ark-La-Tex man drowned over the weekend while vacationing along the Gulf Coast.

The Baldwin County, AL Sheriff's Office told KSLA News 12 that Matthew Hattaway of Bossier City drowned Sunday in the Gulf Shores area, which is 50 miles southeast Mobile, AL.

A family member messaged KSLA News 12's Doug Warner this morning, telling him Matthew was apparently trying to rescue someone else from the rough waters.

According to Matthew's Facebook page, he attended Southwood High School and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He recently became engaged as well.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office says yesterday was a Red Flag Day along the coast, indicating very rough waters along the Gulf beaches.

Sheriff's deputies said two other people along with Matthew drowned in the area over the weekend, while four other people had close calls.

We're continuing to reach out to family members and the Baldwin County, AL Sheriff's Office for more information on this tragedy. Stay with KSLA News 12 and ksla.com for updates to this story.
