Longview animal shelter over capacity again

After making gains in past months, an East Texas animal shelter is now overflowing with cats and dogs. Well over capacity, the Humane Society of Northeast Texas in Longview is desperately pleading for the public to help give homes to needy animals. In just 5 days, the shelter has been flooded with dozens of stray and owner surrendered animals.

"Its been overwhelming. We just see so many come in the last 5 days. I get 20 out to rescue and I get 60 more in. We can house 140. Right now we're looking over double that, over 300 animals, over 200 plus cats," says shelter relocation manager Valerie Mills.

83 animals in 5 days. And there are a flurry of reasons why.

"Animals neglected, people are moving, they found them, people are dumping them on other people's land," says Mills.

Among the population explosion at the shelter are new litters of puppies and kittens. Sadly, when time runs out, those that remain will be euthanized. The shelter can't keep them for long.

"As much as we want to, it breaks my heart but we just can't," Mills says.

Some are lucky, and have been adopted.

"We've had some animals over a month and in the past we have not held on to them that long but we're trying to get them out and save their lives," she says.

It's a race now to save those that can be saved.

"We just need people to come in, adopt; now's the time. We need help," Mills says.

Those interested in adopting are asked to come by the  shelter during business hours. The shelter is located at 303 Enterprise Street, Longview, Texas 75604. The phone number is (903) 297-2170.
