KSLA News 12 Editorial: June 3, 2013- Navy Seals Monument

There is a new monument on the Riverfront in Shreveport we all should visit.

It is a granite memorial to two Shreveport men who grew up here, became friends, joined the navy and were part of Seal Team 6. As you recall, Seal Team 6 was responsible for finding and killing Osama bin Laden.

Lieutenant Commander Jonas Kelsall and Chief Petty Officer Robert Reeves were killed in Afghanistan when the helicopter they were in crashed when it was attacked by insurgents. The monument tells their story including the commendations and medals they received for service to their country. These two men gave their lives to keep us and all Americans safe.

The privately funded memorial is the work of artist Dr. Jim Ciaravella.

The next time you are along the Riverfront in Downtown Shreveport take the time to visit and remember these two hometown heroes.

I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.
