Landers, KSLA recognizes nine Athletes of the Week

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Nine former Athletes of the Week were recognized by KSLA and Landers Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram at our annual Athlete of the  Week banquet. Three of those student-athletes were awarded scholarships. McKenzie Ashby of Evangel, JD Lorence of Byrd, and Brandon Campbell of Mansfield were the three recepients. These student-athletes were selected due to their hard work on and off the field in both academics and their community involvement.

Here are a list of the nine honorees:

Alvin Reine - Bowling (Loyola)

McKenzie Ashby - Softball (Evangel)

Garrett Williams - Baseball (Calvary)

Damien Haskins - Football (New Boston)

JD Lorence - Football/Golf (Byrd)

Halle Washington - Basketball (Parkway)

Brandon Campbell - Football/Basketball (Mansfield)

Myra Martinez - Bowling (Bossier)

Kourtney Pennywell - Basketball (Southwood)

    Jesuit alum Deion Jones intercepted Drew Brees with under two minutes to go in the game, killing a possible tying or winning score by the Saints. The Falcons escaped with a 20-17 victory.  Brees went 26-of-35 passing for 271 yards, with two touchdowns and a pick. He found Tommylee Lewis for a 26-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Michael Thomas caught a 1-yard touchdown in the third. The Saints lost key contributors in the contest due to injury.     The Walk-On’s Independence Bowl was not initially on the University of Southern Mississippi’s radar when it came to possible postseason destinations. But down the stretch of the season, as it became clear that the Southeastern Conference was going to have trouble supplying teams for its bowl tie-ins, the Golden Eagles popped up on the Independence Bowl’s post-Christmas list.
