Sinkhole lawsuit granted class action status

BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -

A federal judge has granted class action status to a lawsuit over the Bayou Corne sinkhole.

The formal order defining the people who are part of the class has not been signed, but it is expected to include anyone who owned or leased property in the evacuation zone.

Property owners near the sinkhole have filed suit against Texas Brine and Occidental Chemical Corporation.

The next status conference is scheduled for June 13, at which point the court could set a trial date.

Residents near the sinkhole have been evacuated since August 2012.
