Weather Service confirms two tornadoes near Waskom Thursday


The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down Thursday afternoon near Waskom in Harrison County.

According to the preliminary damage survey, the supercell thunderstorm that caused damage to numerous homes and vehicles in the area actually produced two tornadoes, both rated an EF-1.

The first tornado touched down around 2:20 pm five miles west of Waskom and carved a path 500 yards wide and 1.5 miles long. This tornado was rated to have peak winds at around 90mph. One person was injured as the result of this tornado. This tornado caused damage to several metal buildings at Five Star Builders. In 2010, an EF3 tornado hit the same location, ripping off the roof of Five Star Builders. The first tornado lasted for four minutes before lifting.

The second tornado touched down around 2:34 pm on the southern end of Waskom, about 1/2 mile south of interstate 20. This tornado traveled on the ground for 1/2 mile and was 200 yards wide and had peak winds 100mph. This tornado caused minor damage to metal buildings and equipment at Red Diamond Oilfield Services, and also caused damage to a few residential homes. The second tornado was on the ground for two minutes.
