NSU falls to Cajuns in NCAA tournament

Jordan Palmer's lone hit of the day was all the Northwestern State softball team could muster in a 3-0 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in the 2013 NCAA Softball Regional Tournament hosted by LSU on Friday afternoon at Tiger Park.

"We came out a little timid in the first couple of innings and the Cajuns took advantage of that," said head coach Donald Pickett. "They're a little bit more of an aggressive team, but we played them a little bit more even throughout the game. We dug ourselves a hole we couldn't get out of, resulting in the loss."

Cheyenne DelaGarza reached on a walk and was pushed to second as Palmer singled to left field in the second with two outs. Shenequia Abby ended the half inning with a strikeout, noting the many innings the Lady Demons left runners on base.

The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board early notching one run in the bottom of the first as senior Kylie Roos (17-5) walked her second batter of the game with the bases loaded.

Louisiana-Lafayette scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to come away with the 3-0 victory.

The Lady Demons had a scoring chance in the fifth when Cali Burke stepped up to the plate with Abby and Palmer on second and third with one out.

Burke bunted in an attempt to put a runner across the plate, but Palmer was tagged out on the quick throw from pitcher Jordan Wallace.

"Jordan did a good job of pitching us high and getting ahead in the count," said Palmer. "We had some good at-bats, but we should have been a little bit more patient up there."

Palmer led from the plate with a one-for-one performance.

Roos allowed seven hits in six solid innings in the circle while striking out two.

The Lady Demons will face the loser of the first-seeded LSU vs. fourth-seeded Central Connecticut match-up at three o'clock Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park.
