KSLA News 12 Editorial: May 15, 2013-Retirement Destination

Where do you plan to retire? Perhaps in your own back yard. Bankrate.com named Louisiana one of the best states for retirees.

The report cites a great mix of low taxes and balmy weather as a reason people may want to retire here. Last year, Louisiana was ranked among one of the worst places to retire, with Bankrate citing our crime rate.

While the study took new factors into account this year, it still says our crime rate, among the highest in the nation, is the big knock on the bayou state. Imagine the possibilities if we could reduce crime. We all know that in addition to the positive factors mentioned, Louisiana is just a great place to live with a culture all its own. Sometimes it's easy to take that for granted. Studies like this remind us that we already have what many people are looking for.

I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.
