Two Grambling Tigers honored by the SWAC

Posted: Updated:

The Southwestern Athletic Conference released the 2013 All-Conference teams. Darren Farmer was named the 2013 Hitter of the Year and Juan Bueno was named to the Second Team.

Head Coach James Cooper stated, "Congratulations to both Darren and Juan, their hard work from the fall and spring has paid off. Their final stats from the season proved this and the conference coaches and SIDs respected them enough to vote for them."

After finishing last season as the Newcomer of the Year, Farmer adds the hitting title to his collegiate career. He sits atop of SWAC leaders in batting average with at .361. He also led the SWAC in sacrifice flies (9) while finishing third in RBI (36). Farmer was also named SWAC Player of the Week during the season. He served the Tigers as the catcher and in the outfield.  Over the last two years he has played in 92 games, had 343 at bats, 71 runs, 112 hits; including 17 doubles, five triples, eight homeruns, 71 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Farmer finished the season ranked 11th in the nation for sacrifice flies.

Grambling State's Juan Bueno served the team well in the infield, en route to nabbing the Second Team shortstop position. Bueno played and started in 45 games this season. In those games he stood in the batter's box 180 times, had 54 hits, 30 RBIs, 30 runs, 10 doubles, five triples, 86 total bases, seven stolen bases and 112 putouts. He finished with a .300 batting average and .478 slugging percentage.

"Both players are looking forward to be drafted, therefore we wish them both well. Farmer is a senior, whereas Bueno is a junior. If he (Bueno) does not go in the draft, he will be looked upon to lead the team during the 2014 season," said Coach Cooper.
