Shreveport Downtown Airport tower to stay open - for now

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The tower at the Shreveport Downtown Airport (DTN) will be staying open after all, at least for now.

It was one of dozens around the country that faced closure due to sequestration, until they received a reprieve Friday from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The Shreveport Airport Authority confirms they received notice from the Federal Aviation Administration that DTN will remain open until further notice. There are 148 other control towers nationwide that will also remain open.

According to a statement released Friday, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the DOT has determined that the recently enacted Reducing Flight Delays Act of 2013 will allow the FAA to transfer sufficient funds to end employee furloughs and keep the 149 contract towers originally slated for closure in June open for the remainder of fiscal year 2013.

Shreveport Downtown Airport was the only control tower that remained on the closure list that initially included six Louisiana airports.

In March, the Shreveport Downtown Airport appealed to the FAA to keep the tower open, pointing out that it is he second-busiest airport in the state and arguing that its closure would create a safety issue as well as have a negative economic impact on the area.

"I am excited a solution to keeping the air traffic control tower at Shreveport Downtown Airport has been reached," said the manager of the Shreveport Downtown Airport. "This is great news for our airport and for the 320 aircraft that are based at Shreveport Downtown Airport. This decision will help keep the local aviation community safe when departing from or flying into Shreveport Downtown Airport."
