Wilson Co. honors officers who have died in the line of duty

Wilson County law enforcement officials paid tribute Thursday to those who have given their lives in the line of duty, dating all the way back to the early 1900s.

A total of nine men were honored, ranging from troopers to constables, but the final two names on the list were the ones that will likely sound the most familiar.

It has been nearly a decade since Wilson County Deputy Jon Musice and Mount Juliet police Sgt. Jerry Mundy were struck and killed on the side of Interstate 40.

Fallon Tallent had been on the run from Knoxville on the morning of July 9, 2003, and as she swerved to avoid a set of spike strips, she hit the officers instead.

It was a day no one in the room Thursday can forget.

"I see Detective [David] Stolinsky look down at his pager, he steps out in the hallway, and he comes right back in. I mean, just on cue - almost like it had been rehearsed - every Mount Juliet officer got up and left. I knew something was up," said Wilson County Judge Barry Tatum.

The two men lost were fathers, husbands and friends.

"Some days it feels like it's been forever, and other days it feels like it was yesterday," said Tish Mundy, widow of Jerry Mundy.

Two crosses still mark the location beside the interstate where two lives were lost but not forgotten.

"Jon was just a simple man. He lived here in Lebanon his whole life except when he went to the service. And he was just a giver - gave everything he had to give to whoever needed it," said Rhonda Musice, widow of Jon Musice.

As for Tallent, she is now serving two life sentences in prison.

"She'll never be out of prison. What more could you ask for?" said Stolinsky, with the Mount Juliet Police Department.

Tallent has always maintained that she accidentally ran over the officers. She has filed numerous appeals over the years, but none of them have been granted.
