Every year, as many as 1,500 people drown in the United States.

The Coast Guard estimates almost all of those deaths could have been prevented if they had been wearing a life jacket or they knew how to swim.

Just think back to August of 2010 when six teenagers died in the Red River just north of the Jimmy Davis Bridge. The Shreveport teens drowned after they were playing in shallow water then stepped off into deep water.

With that in mind…this weekends Water Resource Festival in Bossier City will have an emphasis on water safety. Experts will teach school children the importance of wearing a life jacket and knowing how to swim and life saving techniques will be demonstrated.

Saturday's Water Resource Festival is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Louisiana Boardwalk. Demonstrations include a simulated water rescue in the Red River. The event is made possible by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Aquatic and Wildlife Education Foundation and the Louisiana Boardwalk.

With all the rivers, lakes and ponds in the ArkLaTex, knowing how to be safe in and around water is something we all need to know.

I'm James Smith.
