CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A well-known local attorney, who's argued some headline-grabbing cases, is now in trouble with the law himself.

John Herbison said he was returning to Clarksville after a court hearing in Nashville when he was pulled over Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 24 in Clarksville.

Herbison said a trooper ticketed him for speeding, asked him to perform field sobriety tests then charged him with DUI.

Herbison defended Perry March when March was convicted of the murder of his wife, Janet.

Herbison also defended Jason Burdick, who is known as the "Wooded Rapist" and Byron "Low Tax" Looper - the political rival who murdered State Sen. Tommy Burks.

Herbison bonded out of jail Wednesday, and Channel 4 News spoke with him by phone, when he said he gave a blood sample and is confident it will prove he is innocent.

"It's been 30 months since I had anything alcoholic to drink, and it's been more than 40 years since I've consumed any illegal controlled substances," Herbison said.

Herbison did not elaborate any more on that comment.

He is expected in court for the DUI charge next week.
